1981 BEP Souvenir Card 1905 $20 Gold Certificate Note Print Memphis Show

Design: Detailed vignette of George Washington at center, ornate scrollwork borders, gold overprint, red Treasury seal, and large "IN GOLD COIN" legend across the bottom of the note image.

Historical text on the card explains that engraving for this $20 Gold Certificate, Series 1905, began in 1904 and was completed in 1905, and that the portrait of George Washington was engraved by A. Sealey in June 1867 based on a painting by Gilbert Stuart.

The printed description notes that this gold certificate is considered the most beautiful of all U.S. gold certificates because of its color and is often referred to as the "technicolor" note.

Additional text states that gold certificates were withdrawn from circulation with gold coin and bullion under the Emergency Bank Act of 1933, that it was illegal to hold gold certificates until April 24, 1964, and that only certificates issued prior to January 30, 1934 could later be acquired and held.

The narrative explains that gold certificates are the only U.S. currency ever to be recalled in American history.
